MEMORIAL ARCH
A well-attended meeting of the NorthEast Valley Memorial Arch Committees was held on Saturday evening, the chairman, Mr A. E. Ansell, presiding. Mr Adsoll reported tliat good progress had been made with the building of the arch, which would, with the exception of the marble statue, be completed in two weeks' time. The order for tho statue had been placed in Italy, and this would toko somo months to complete. The concert recently held in Ilis Majesty's Theatre was a decided success, and tho funds had benefited to tho extent of about £150. The outstanding features of the organisation of tho entertainment had been the willingness of the artists to assist in suoh a worthy cause, tho valued assistance given by Mr F. J. Carter, and the amount of work carried out by the secretary, Mr W. Steele. Although tho executive had undertaken a task involving tho raising of the sum of £500, that amount had been almost Teached, it being now only about £25 short of the required sum. In addition to building a memorial which would be a worthy tribute to the memory of the men who had fallen in the fight, tho executive had placed aside the sum of £50 to provide an annuity to be used for the purpose of presenting annual prizes to tho scholars of tho local sdhool for tho best essays on "New Zealand's Part in' the Great War," thus perpetuating the deeds of New Zealand's boys. The secretary was instructed, to write a letter of thanks to Messrs F. J. Carter and P. J. Blackman for their suggestions and assistance.
