Tho monthly meeting of the Clutha County Council was lickl in tho Council Chambers on Friday; present—Mr A. M'lntyro (chairman), Cra A. North, A. Cooper, T. Jlaginness, 11. Morrison, J. Cumming, J.' Itegg, J. Christie, H. Steel, and J. Edwards.

Edgar and "Walker waited upon the -council with reference to a bridge over the Pomaliaka ltiver at Tweedie's Ford.—Mr llidgar said that about a year ago a deputation brought tho fatiTS before tho council, ihe settlers were prepared l to guarantee £-100 towards the cost of the bridge. Tho Government would promise a grant of £2 for £3. lie settlors asked tho Clutha. County for ±400, tho Tuapeka County for £100, and they were prepared to pay £400. The District Engineer, Public Works Department, wrote asking if the council would contribute £30 towards cost of givin" access to section 3, block 111, Woodland S.D.mf t° . be P aid b y council. llie District Engineer, Public Works Department, wrote further, stating that he had received a petition from seven settlers asking that a bad piece of M'Kenzie road. Glenomaru, be metalled, and requesting the expenditure of about £200 on the work. The crusher wii 3 on the sate,- and the writer thought it -was desirable to have the work done, as, the contractor was at present in the locality. If the council would find half the cost, or £120, he would recommend tho department to provide a £ for £ subsidy on tho amount. The department would do the work, or the council could do it and receive the money for expenditure.—Left to engineer and member for tho riding. ° The District Engineer, Public Works Department, forwarded particulars of work done on Catlins bridge to Houipapa road, and asked that the account for £275 6s he passed for payment.—Held over.

The District Engineer, Public Works Department, asked for payment of £56 17a County Council's share of work on Ratanui to laliakopa beach road, and £241 Gs Bcl for woik on Owaka to Catlins Hivcr bridge.Referred to engineer for report. ° Tho Clerk, Bruce County Council, wrote stating that his council was agreeable to an. engine being placed on the Clydovale- punt —Received.

+ M lO A S . c l cr^ lr y. otago Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, wrote under date June 11 stating that a comjnittee of the board would visit Balclutha on July 15 to inspect sites offered for sale for the erection of a hospital, and -invited representatives to attend the inspection. He forwarded «, list of properties, and asked for information as to value.—Tho Clerk reported that upon receipt of the letter he sent a copy on to the chairman, but" he could not be present.—Received without comment.

The Otago Hospital and Charitable Aid Board forwarded account for levy amounting to £5283 3s 3d, and asked for monthly payment.—To be paid, Cr North adding: "Under protest."

Messrs D. Stewart and Sons, solicitors wrote stating that the South Otago Freezing Company declined to pay anything in connection with the damago to the road at O.tanomomo. The writers asked if the council would proceed with their claim for £120.—After discussion it was decided to try and conio to some arrangement with, the company.

Eight ratepayers of South Molyneux Riding applied for a further grant for the continuation of the Nugget Burn read. —To be sent to Government asking that request be given effect to.

■The Mayor of Tapanui wrote asking the support of the council for the movement to transfer the control of the Blue Mountains to the new Forestry Department. The object was to protect existing forest area, which is very large, also to re-forest the many bare places, existing rights on tho hill included the sawmill area, at llongahere, which were 10Jbe protected. The new department would let all grazing areas to returned soldiers ■until they would be needed for forestrv operations. They would encourage fruit and walnut growing in the Molyncux Valley i ancy timbers would be extensively grown and soft timber would be creosoted for fairness' fencing by a new plant to be installed by the department.—lt was decided that tho council support the movement.
