THE LIBERAL PARTY
LEADER'S CONFIDENCE. (Pee United Pkess ,Associatiok.) CHRISTCHURCH, May 24. The Hon. W. D. S. MacDonaTd" is confident of the solidarity of tho Liberal Party, While numerically it was not so strong as it was prior to the general etection, he said to an interviewer that the calibre of the. men and their determination to fight the, cause of Liberalism were stronger ".'than.' ever. "So far as one can judge at tho ; moment, with Independents and men who are dissatisfied, the wholo position outside tho solid members of tho Liberal and Reform Parties is chaotic, and it will be only after the Houoo meets that one will be able to judge cxaotly tho strength of the opposing forces. So far as the Liberal Party is concerned, wo .fought the election -with a progressive policy, and as far as possible we want to see our lino of policy given offset to. It is not our intention to harass or embarrass the Government in any .way, and all legislation that is for the- general welfare of the people will receiva our support. The last two by-elections, .-which wer<? fought out on definite lines betqwen the Reform and Libera] Parties, were, won' for Liberalism, although they were both Ministerial seats and our candidates weme both now men. This is a strong indication that tho country is not altogether satisfied with tho Reform Party."
