TRAMWAY TRAFFIC
A RECORD ESTABLISHED.
The City Corporation tramways have had a busy time during the past two or three days, and, as far as anyone can judge, th> employees have been working at their utmost capacity. On Tuesday the taking were £431, which represent* the fares of all those travelling over «ity ,*nd suburban lines, exclua.ve of Mornington The taking on Wednesday were a tccord and were fully £100 beyond those of people s agricultural show day in 1910 when the total takings were £556.' That was tor the period, a record, but it was beaten on Wednesday by £115, when the total money rr, n o'?, s f dl P ver the lilloS "-as £561. the £536 referred to included a special nngle fare of sixpence to Tahuna Park. The iaet that only ordinary fares •,vere charged on Wednesday goes to show that the mm; ber travelling on that day must have largely exceeded that of 1910—more largely than the gross takings disclose. The crowd was. enormous, and not a few had to adopt In man means of locomotion on account of their inability to find room in the cars lhe two principal causes of ?o largo a number travelling by tram were the Children I '. Demonstration in the morning at Tuhun* 1 ark. the Military Review in the afternoon at Jorbury Pi.rk, and the Soldiers' Recep. t:on to tne Prince of Wales in the cvonin" at Kensington Drill Hall Twonty-two cars wore employed from 9 10 am. to 10.45 am conveying the children to lahuna Paik. Thes.3 cars made in all 60 trips, and over 5000 children were carried. The public had then to be thought of. and from 11.15 a.m. onwards 25 ears were engaged m carrying people to Tahuna, The crush was enormous, and. as might be ex pectrd on such an occasion, there were not nearly sufficient cars to cope with the traffic When the cars had distributed their loads in the city after the demonstraton they were at once employed in taking the people out to Forbury Park. All the cars were packed to their utmost capacity, and it was 2.15 .before the la=t carload left the Stock Exchange fo.-Forbury. Tie loading, as was to be expected, was very heavy on the return from Forbury. The heaviest task was met with between 10.30 a.m. and 11.15 a.m., when the general public had to be catered for. The total distance covered during the day was 4"23 niles. It will be easily understood tint the tramway officials libd an anxiens time whiie conveying the children to Tahuna Park, and were kept unusually alert un to thttimo cars ftopped abaut 11 o'clock. The day was singularly free from accident. A few roirhnps orcurrcd ihrovgh passengers boardinir or alighting ears without taking proper cure, but no one suffered any injury worth mentioning>
