Dr Scholen'eld will give a short series of lectures on "The Pacific" at Canterbury College next month. General Bramwell Booth, of the Salvation Army, will bo accorded a civio , reception on his arrival at Wellington from Sydney by the Mocraki on Monday, Juno 7. The' General will go to Christchurch that night, and, after visiting Dunedin, will return to Wellington on Juno 15. After remaining for a week, ho will leave for Auckland, and will sail from that port for Vancouver by the Niagara threo days later. A large number of commercial travellers met at the C. T. and W. A. Club on Saturday to do honour to an old comrade of the : road, Mr A. D. Smith (of Mesers. Secular and Co.), on the occasion of his leaving "the road" and to congratulate him on his veilearned advancement to the managerial chair. Mr O. H. Morrall presided, and waa supported by Mr D. M'Pherson (president of the club) and Mr J. Gillan. In making the presentation of a gold wateh, the chairman spoke of the high character and the many sterling qualities Mr Smith possessed. Messrs D. M'Pherson. Gillan, Gain, Manhire, und other speakers spoke in a similar strain, one and all wishing him long Ufa and happiness. The gathering conclnded with singing "He's a Jolly Good Fellow" and the National Anthem. ■ Mf M. E. Mergcniheim, hon. secretary ' of the Sydney Metropolitan Repatriation Executive, died at Rotorua on the 6th insfc. The late Mr Mergentheim waa visiting l . " New Zealand under a comrniaion from the Commonwealth Minister of Repatriation to investigate the New Zealand system, and .'■ had already several months in this country, includipgf several days in Dunedin, collecting data., when he was seized with, pneumonia, to which he succumbed after a very brief illness. Mrs Mersentheim, who accompanied her husband to the dominion, ; will return to Australia at an early date. Mr G. A. Noble-Campbell, district manager at Invercargill of the Government Life Insurance Department, has been promoted to the position of head officer of the correspondence branch at the head office, Wei- •' lington, and expects to leave Invercargill towards the end of the month. Mr Campbell has been in Invercargill sinco August, Mr T. G. Brickell, who has resigned his position as commercial master at the South- ; land Technical College in order to join the firm of Messrs R. Hudson and Co., Dunedin, was met by the students (says the Southland Times), and presented with an ';, electroplated thermos flask' and some stainless cutlery. The presentation was made by one of the boy students, who referred to Mr Brickell's popularity with the- pupils, and • oxpresscd tne hope that good fortune would* bo with him in his new position. Afterwards Mr Brickell was entertained at tea by the staff, and presented with a bronze table standard.
