ACUTE SHORTAGE IN WELLINGTON,

(Peb United Press Association.) 'WELLINGTON, May 19. Ine shortage of houses throughout the dominion has become so acute that Cabinet has agreed, m an effort to aid tho rapid construction of dwellings, that in future practically only essential buildings are to be proceeded with. A brief announcement to this effect was made by tho Primo Minister this morning, but no details of tho means of carrying the decision into effect are available. Tho decision of Cabinet does not apply to buildings already in course of construction. It is- understood that no new legislation will be needed to give effect to the proposal, but that advantage will be taken of the War Regulations, which make it necessary for the approval of the Minister of Finance to bo secured when the erection of a building costing mo ro than £5500 is contemplated. Tho new conditions are expected to come into force almost immediately. Mr Massey said that ho had been informed by the Labour Department that there were 1200 residences at present in course of erection yj New Zealand
