DUNEDIN HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.
WBWKKi SHOWi
Iho winter show in connection wi& the Dunedin Horticultural Society was opened yeatorday ia Herbert, Haynes's rooms, Octagon. Though the weather has not been all that could have been dosirod for the growth of ohrysanthemums, the di&pl&y compares very favourably with thoso of former years, both as regards form and oolour. The staging stewards havo aJsc clono their work well, eo that the exhibits are soon to the best advantage. The ahovt is notable for tlio foot that for the iirsi time Mr 11. T. Trevenn, secured premier ship honours. . Mr E. A. Haniol gainec tho award for the beet bloom in the show with a very lino sample of "Louisa Pockett' (white), anil also scored premiership honoun amongst tho pinks, with a very well-growi bloom of "Uallipoli." Mr Trovena was awarded prermerships in yellow and bronzo with "Airs R. O. Pulling" and "Editi Uavell" respectively, both of which ar< very admirable samples of the flowen named, and but little behind the premiei bloom of the show. To tho left, on enter nig, tho first exhibit to attract notice i a collection of ferns and foliage plants for which Mr A. Gillam gained a firs prize. The Auraoaria Exc&lsa is a ver; well-grown plant, and the adiantum is o' good colour for this time of the year. / hue table of foliage plants and flowon is shown by Mr E. J. Halstead, and growi by his gardener, Mr Roy. The plants an all clean and well grown, and are tasteful!; staged. A "Nevius" (yellow chrysanthe" muni) stands out among the flowers, and > neat edging of ornamental grass in pot completes a, collection that is certain t< command attention. Mr E. A. HameTi stand is tho only one in for open eham pionship, and it well deserves the firs prize, "Gallopoli" (pink) and "Editl Caveil" (light bronze) being amongst thi best of tho oollection, both in colour ant formation. For tho Moss Memorial Ohal lenge (open) Mr Hamel was again success ful, the two best blooms in the oolleotioi being "Lady Talbot" and "Woodside, , two yeHowe, which aro very line' in forma tion. Mr H. T. Trevena seoured secoiK honours, his "Edith Caveil" and "Mre R C. Pulling" being each the best of it kind in the show. Mr W. M. Bcal gainec third prize, has best bloom being "Louisj Pookett" Mi- H. T. Trevena has a ven fine even six (other than whites or yellows) and was an eaey first in the class, Mr W M. Boal being second.. Mr Trevena's si: Japanese varieties are a very good lot especially "Golden Champion" and "H J. Jones," two yellows. Mr Beal wai placed second with an even lot, none o which stood out. Mr E. A. Hamel's is th< only entry in the 12 varieties of Japanese for which he well deserved the first prize "Lady Talbot" and "W. Turner" are veri well shaped, though the latter is not « very large sample. Mr W. M. Beal gainec first honours for three whites and thr» yellows—a very even collection. Mr E L. Macassey practically scooped the poo in singles, the blooms ho showß beinj good in both shape and colour. In thi amateur class Mr A. Gillam gained firs: prize with an admirable collection, "Galli poli," "J. S. Lloyd," and "Wm, Turner , all being well grown and clean flowers Mr W. J. Porter was second, his besi bloom being a very nice "Williani Turner. , Mr Gilbert's win was all the more gratify ing in that it was his first exhibit at i Dunedin winter show. In Mr T. O'Brien , ! collection of six Japanese, for -which. In gained first award, the best bloom is i good sample of " Edith Caveil." A bloon of the same flower, with one of "Mrs J J. Williams" aro the outstanding feature of his colleetio"n of 12, for which he als< gained first prize, Mr A. Gillam being second with an even lot. The amatew championship for 12 varieties was carriec off by Mr O'Brien, with an even .collectioi of which the judge spoke very highly. Tin table decoration, though there are not man; entries, has brought out a considerable display of artistic taste. This is particu larly the case with the first prize-winnei (Miss A. M'lntyre), whose decoration i more, open and natural looking than tha by Mrs J. P. Johnson, the second prize winner, though this also ie conspicuous foi good taste. In the amateur class, Mm W. Jones is the prize-winner. The tabli is neatly adorned, but lacks the variety t( be found in the tables in the open class Tho first prize for a table of chryeanthe mums other than singles was carried of by Mr T. Y. Turner, with a very good clean, well-grown lot, in which "Nevius' and "AUendale Beauty" are conspicuous Mr T. O'Brien was placed second, with ai even and clean lot of blooms. The flora work-baskets, bowls, epergnes, and vasesall display considerable taste, those b; Miss M'lntyre showing out particularly ii this respect. In the amateur class Mr W. Jones was rery successful. In the po plants, Mr K A. Hamel carried off nearl; all the awards, the only other prize-winne: being Mr E. A. Gillam. In the vegetable classes, there was ai added interest in the fact that amongs the competitors is Mr E; M'Gregor, wh< das been a successful competitor in sonn 3f the beat shows at Home. His collection for which ho gained first prize, is an .espeoi ally noteworthy one. Amongst the othe: prominent prize-winners are the Karitane Harris Hospital and Messrs W. M. Beal, J £aan, and W. Sainsbury. In one coilec tion is a plate of out of season peas,,ant there are also some very fine samples o jther vegetables, particularly broccoli >nions, and carrots. The display of fruit is a satisfactory one :mt the oolour is not so good as it ha aeem in more favourable seasons. Ton sin's Trust has a very fine exhibit o ipples (eating and cooking) for export, an< Mis T. Sourr shows an exceptionally goo< ianjple of Muscat grapes, the berries o ivhioh. are large and the bunches are wel illed. In the children's collection o seeds, Audrey Hay won first prize anc 3abhie Milburn second.
There were present in the afternoon the usual number of enthusiasts, who go to see the exhibits at their beat. Tho attend-
ance in the evening was much larger, and there was the added attraction of an en-
joyable programme of music supplied bj a capable orchestra. This morning th< show will be opened at 10 o'clock, to give visitors from the country who have been to see the Prince of Wales off an opportunity of viewing the exhibits before leav. ing for home. It will also be open in the afternoon and evening, and at the lattei session the orchestra will supply another programme. PEIZE LIST.
