CONCILIATION COUNCIL

ENGINEERS AND METAL WORKERS .: DISPUTE. Mr W. H. Hagger, Conciliation Commiswas , engaged for over six hoars yesterday hearing * tho dispute between ~the Dqnedin branch of the Amalgamated Society of Engineers, Cycle, Motor Mechanics, etc. Metal Union of Workers, and the employers, numbering about 60. The matter had been-adjourned from a previous sitting, thfe points remaining in dispute being hours of'.work, wages, degree of heat in confined Bpaces, overtime, holidays, and the term of the award. The union was represented by Messrs T. D. Smith, A. J. Skilbeck, and H. Kendall, Mr L. F. Evans apearing as agent; and the employers .by Messrs T. Gillies and J.B. Shacklock. The hours agreed upon were 44 per week; 8 hours on five days a week and 4- hours on Saturday; the hours of starting and ceaev in# work to 'be mutually agreed upon and to be between 7.45 a.m. and 5 p.m. on 5 days and 7.45 and noon on Saturdays. Jt was agreed that any worker who waa required to work in confined spaces or compartments where the heat exceeded 110. degrees should be paid at double the ordinary rates.

In overtime, the first threo hours is to bo ✓ paid for at the rate of time and a-half; thereafter double time. No worker is to work more than 24 hours, including meal times, except by mutual agreement. _ A worker required to work all day and night, and being required to continue on next day, shall be paid double time rates for all such timo worked. Meal time, when overtime has been worked, shall bo paid for. Overtime to be computed on a flat rate, plus bonus. . Tho workers to bo included in the award shall be pattern-makers, fitters, turners, blacksmiths, coppersmiths, tool-makers, die sinkers, electro-platers, brass finishers, brass polishers, milling machinists, millwrights, planers, shapers, slotters, borers, oxy-acety-lene affd ejectno welders. All the above workers, with the exception of the followipg, shall receive 2s an hour:—Planers, slotters, sbapers, and borers, Iβ 10id an hour; oxy-acetylene welders, Iβ a day extra -oh the above rates. The question of the employment of workers on stock catalogue work was referred to the court. ; In addition to the wages prescribed to be paid, the workers above-mentioned shall receive 3d en hour extra unless the court orders otherwise. • No engineer will be required to work in a place where tho temperature is above 150deg. When engaged in freezing chambers with a temperature of 30deg, workers to receive 3d an hour extra. In connection with dirty work, those employed about ships in duty work shall receive Is 6d a day extra. The employee ashore engaged on dirt work, certified to by the foreman, shall receive Is 6d a day extra. Workers engaged on manure plants Is 6d a day extra. In-the caso of outside work tho employers shaU:'.pay fares to the works, both. ways. If a> worker (is unable to return to his home* board and lodging shall be provided by the employer. Travelling time to be paid for at the ordinary rates, with a limit of eight hours. When a, worker has to travel by steamer a saloon fare shall be paid- for by the employer. ;. Electric light shall be provided on board ship, if possiblo, and proper shelter bo erected in wet weathe/r. Flares may be used by the consent of workers. 'An accident clause was also agreed to as to tfie keeping of a St. John Ambulance first-aid compressed kit in a convenient place on the works, etc. In connection wrfch apprentices, one gaining a certificate in grade 1 of mechanical engineering of tho City and Guilds of tho London Institute shall receive 5s a week extra. In other respects the terms _ of the old award were agreed to, with an increase ja wages of 5s all roimd. ■ The preference clause was referred to the court.; "The scope of tho award is to cover tho whole oE the industrial district of Otago and Southland, and it is to be for a term of one year.
