AMERICA AND THE TREATY. SENATOR HITCHCOCK'S PREDICTION. WASHINGTON-, April 5. (Received April 6, at 0.25 p.m.) The New York Times Washington correspondent says that Senator Hitchcock predicted that the League Covenant would bt- separated from the Treaty and offered as an amendment to the joint peace resolution. The Republicans expressed surprise that Senator Hitchcock considered it possible to separate the covenant from tho Treaty, and said they would offer the Treaty terms as an amendment to the peace resolution. Some Republicans said the covenant should be rejected since tho peace resolution was inten'ded onlv to declare peace between Germany and United States, while the league of which Germany is not yet a member concerned the Allies and the United States.—A. and N.Z.
