CALEDONIAN GROUND

KNTEEPBISQIG PBOJEOT SUGGESTED. OTAGO A. AND P. SOCHETY AND THE , scottish soGnzry. A' scheme which is at present "in tho air," bat which it ia hoped, in the interests of tho city, will some day in the near future take definite shape is now being pondered by the executives of the Caledonian Sdaiety and the Ot&go Agricultural anrf Pastoral Society. Tho scheme is for r tlw two societies to join forces and erect * avteggie building, with a grandstand on top, on the Caledonian Grounds. As a result of the growing activities of the Agricultural Society and the increasing >« popularity of the Winter Show, the present buildings in Crawford street are proving insufficient to meet the demands made on them, and the society, in a most commendable spirit of enterprise, ia beginning to look around to see what can bo done to meet the position. On tho other hand, tho Caledonian Society has realised for sometime past that a new grand stand is necessary on its ground. *' The idea, therefore, is to pull down the existing grand stand and ereot a building which could be used for show purposes by the Agricultural Society; on the top of the bmKTinrr a grand' stand would be erected. The playing groirnd would not be interfered with—only to tho extent of making improvements on it. It is understood that even flow it has been decided to remove the old cycle track. ■ ■ , The scheme is a most enterprising one — 'Hie spirit of the early Scottish, pioneers ' haa nol died l —and it does not require a great deal of imagination to realise what 1 a fine asset it wonld be to the citv of Dunediri if the buildings and grand stand wore *■' gone'on with. The idea so commendsitself that one member of the Caledonian ■ Society sra'd he believed thj>t if some one ■'''' carta© forward and offered either of the two societies a donation of, say £100, conditional on the work being proceeded with, it wcttild have the effect of at once crnlVahfeing the scheme into active life. The old adage says thero is no time like the nreSflnt.
