— Tho numerous biographies by distinEuishod generals and admirals, showing how each of thorn won tho war, was the most prominent feature of the autumn publishing reason. which has now reached its ond. Tho impression left on the public mind by those books (Boys a correspondent) is ono of svmazomont that iji tho face of the continuous blunders by colleagues and contemporaries of these distinguished generals and admirals, tho war was won. But these egotistical authors, in disparaging 1 the public services of others, have rovealcd that they nre not superior to petty jealousios. In destroying othor publio reputations they have also destroyed their own. The rovelat.ions contained in these biogrraphies show with what little wisdom the world is governed, and on what shallow foundations groat reputations have b«ea built up.
