NEW ZEALAND ACCOUNTANTS
HALF-YEARLY MEETING OF SOCIETY. (Pxh Unitkd I'Hissa Association.) WELLINGTON, February 26. The half-yearly meeting of tho council of the New Zealand Society of Accountants was held in Wellington (his week, delegates from all districts in tho dominion being in attendance. Questions dealing with the welfare of the profession were discussed, and among others, it was decided to circularise employers pointing out the advantages attaining to them through their employees studying for and qualifying by examination for the membership of tho society. Owing to tho very heavy additional expenses now incurred in carrying on a public practice, the council of tho society is of tho opinion that the time has arrived when tile fees of accouutants for auditing and general accountancy work should be substantially increased. It was mentioned that the Prime Minister, during his election campaign, had stated that if returned to power, he would consider the setting up of a commission to revise tho -whole system of taxation, and in tho opinion of the council this commission should include an accountant whoso experience and advice in taxation work would bo of undoubted benefit. At the examinations .conducted by the University on behalf of the society last November, 442 candidates presented themselves. Of these 201 wore successful .'n either completing tho Examination or gaining a sectional pass. Tho regulations troverning the supplementary examination had been altered and, commencing in March, 1921, a candidate sitting for his final examination would be required to take only those subjects in which he failed at the November examination, provided that he had not more than two subjects to complete his pass. It is the intention of tho council of the society to make application to the University authorities to have the subject of economics and civics included in the syllabus and made a subject for matriculation. Tin's will then give students an opportunity of early tuition in a subject of undoubted value, and the study will almost certainly be continued by those who wish to make advancement in the commercial world.
