The engineors are meeting to-day, when it is expected that the strike will Do declared off. All tho maritime unions are now ready to resume worlc. i STRIKE DECLARED OFF. SYDNEY, February 26. The marine engineers' strike will DC officially declared off at 3 o'clock to-day. The Riverina is expected to sail for Wellington to-morrow. A section of the men is dissatisfied, and severely criticises the executive's conduct of negotiations.—A. and N.Z. Cable. MELBOURNE, February 26. Most of the men have reported for duty, and a number have been engaged, but there is still some dissatisfaction with tho executive's action. RAND NATIVES' STRIKE. TREACHEROUS ATTACK ON POLICE. POSITION IMPROVING. CAPETOWN, February 25. The strike amongst the natives employed in the Johannesburg mines has caused much native unrest, including a demand by the native house-boys and shop-boys for increased wages. The position is now improving, and many strikers are resuming work. An experiment at one mine, where the white miners volunteered to work to show the natives that they were not indispensable, had a beneficial effect. At one tima 50,000 men were affected. In view of the intimidation method? employed police protection was afforded to those resuming. This led to a fracas in a village. Under the impression that force was being used to compel the natives to resume, when the police entered the compound the natives attacked them with assagais and sticks. The police were compelled to fire, and about 25 natives and a number of police and mounted riflemen we wounded.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
