The barque Rona, from l Pip, arrived at Auckland early yesterday morning. The collier Ngahere arrived at Auckland trom Wellington yesterday morning. Gibean, of the Union Company's steamer Katoa, has been appointed Government Inspector of Seamen at Wellington in succession, to Captain W. F. Clark, who lias been appointed Surveyor of Ships. The reconstruction work of No. 2 jetty, at iLyttelton, which is to be the berthing place of the ferry steamers, is proceeding satisfactorily. The jetty is to be lengthened by about 200 ft, and a platform and shelter shed, which will extend for about two-thirds of the length of the jetty, will also be oonBtruoted, bo that passengera on alighting from the train to board the ferry steamer will be under cover. Two sets of railway lines are now being laid.

SICK SEAMEN'S PAY. By tho endeavours of tho Federated l Seatoon's Union, Nbw Zealand seamen who have been ashore in distant lands through sickness have hod a disability removed. A case arose rooontly in which a ec-aman on the ■Waitomo waa placod ashore at Calcutta through illness audi left there in hospital. Ho deposited money with tho Government Shipping Master there, drew Bonne of it, ami, on returning - to New Zealand 1 in the Waihora, understood that he would receive the balance on arrival here. However, it was not forthcoming, the money having been sent to tho Board of Trade, Londbn, although the conveyance came to New Zealand. The Seamen's Union took steps through tho Marine Department to got the balaaoe of the money remitted to Now Zealand so that tits man could obtain it, and at tho farmo timo the Board of Trade wao requested to instruct its officials at ouch ports to remit to New| "Zealand in fubaro all wages and other moneys dwpceited on behalf of New Zealand eeaman when iirvailidod abroad from New Zealand ships. Tho Seamen's Union has now been informed by tho Marino Department that it is in receipt of from the Board of Trade that arrangements have bean made so that the payment of the balance duo to such seamen will bo madia on arrival in.
