At Riverbank, on New Year's Eve, the proprietor (Mr Big-wood) announced that six years ago ho and Mrs Bigwood had started the establishment in a four-roomed cottage. With their present batch of guests they had exoeeded the first thousand, and the thousandth boarder would receive a week's board free. The names were subsequently checked, and at breakfast on New Year's Day the fortunate boarder—a young lady—received the price of a week's board. In the evening a ooncert and dance wore held in the hall, whioh was packed, while many occupied seats cm the grass outside. An excellent pi-offrammo was supplied, the T>erformer3 including several well-known Dunedin amateurs. Miss Inglis ooened the proceedings with a piano solo, after which vocal items were supplied by Mrs Clark, Mr and Mrs Dcsmoulins, Mr King, Misses Given and Philippa Mixtuns, Messrs Cheyne, and Piddnck, A clever character f'ketoh _ by_ Misses Vera and Boreen Hayward, recitations by Mr Salmon and Master J.
