A welcome" homo social to soldiers who had gone to the war from tho Hampden district was held at Hampden recently. The Mayor of llampdcn (Air W. Nicolsou) presided, and he was accompanied on the platform by Sir James Allen, Lady Allen, and Captain A. M'WilEams. The Mayor, in his speech, paid a tribute to Sir James Allen's management of affairs during tho war, and stated that altogether 70 boys had gone away from the Moeraki Riding, of whom 16 bad mado the cupremo sacrifice. Sir James Allen presented a. certificate to each of. the returned men, and Lady Allen handed a certificate to tho next-of-kin of each deceased soldier. During the evening musical items were rendered by Mrs Doug! s, Miss Lincoln. Miss D. ZafTer, Mias laa Vi'.Js Sinclair, and Mra Dougbs, who also played the accompaniments.
