BANKING OPERATIONS. A RECORD TURNOVER. Pr«M Aaweiation—By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, "January 1. The bankers' clearing-house operations in 1919 aggregated £28,415,000,000, being an increase of £7,217,000,000 over 1918, and surpassing all records. The high cost of materials increased the price of production, and the consequent greater demand for banking accommodation largely accounts for the greater turnover.—A. and N.Z. Cable. BRITISH TRADE. AN OPTIMISTIC SURVEY. LONDON, January 3. Ivlr Winston Churchill, speaking at Sunderland, gave ail optimistic survey of the country, which he said was on the high road to recovery, and was quickly getting into its stride. Manufactures were expanding, and orders both at Home and abroad were steadily increasing, while the expenditure was rapidly decreasing.—A. and N.Z. Cable. SEQUEL TO RATIONING. THOUSANDS REJUVENATED. LONDON, January 3. The remarkable longevity records during 1919 have raised a discussion on one of the most pleasant effects of the war. Both doctors and insurance experts agree that food rationing lias* rejuvenated thousands of people by eliminating their surplus fat. This applies in cases where compulsory economy and high prices meant only a reduction in the quantity of food consumed, not accompanied bv a decline in its nutritive qualities. Last year's deaths in Britain included those of 284 centenarians and nonagenarians.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
