OTAGO AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP. SOME FINE PLAY WITNESSED. The Otago Golf Club's New Your tournament was continued yesterday under ideal climatic conditions. A good deal of interest was taken in the progress of the ohampionship, the first round of which was played during the forenoon, and the second round in the afternoon. Barnett (Otago) and Drake (St. Clair) were the first pan- to drive off in tho second round. At one stage Drake was 3 up, but Barnett made the score all square by winning Tippurary, Roy's, and the Gums. Driving to tho lust hole, both players were just short of tho green with their second shots. Harnett landed on the green within 4ft of tho pin with his third, whilo Drake was still a little short. Barnett holed out with his fourth, while Drake missed, and Barnett won the match, 1 up. Principal interest centred in the meeting between Ross and Wight. The first holo was halved in Bogey. Boss found the bunker to the left of Flagstaff with his drive; Wight was short with his second, and both failed to holo out in 4, and halved the hole in 5. At Goodwin's Ross got in a luoky long putt from the edge of the green and holed' in 3. The fourth was halved in 4. Going to the Terraoo each got in a (rood long drive, but both were short with their second. Wight was again short with his third, and Ross won the hole with a fairly long putt in 4, his opponent taking 5. Both put in good drives to The Ridge, and wero just short of the grfen. Each failed to holo out with their third shot, and the hole was halved in 4. Going to Camel's Back both were short with their second shots. Ross pitched hia third dead and holed out in 4 to Wight's 5, and was thus 3 up. At tho Monastery both got in good drives, tot were short with their second strokes, and they also missed their putts, the hole being halved in 5. At the Glen both players drove into tho gorse, and the holo was halved in 5. Thev reached the green at the Mount in 2, and Wight holed °"ti >'" 3, Ross taking 4. Tipperarv and MGlashans were each halved in 5 Both players got into trouble at Manuka, which was halved in seven—a poor hole. Roys was won by Wight in three, and Spion Kop was halved. Wight failed to carry Hawthorns with his second and lost the hole in five, this makine Rosa dormv. Both reached the Gums with their drives and' ohipped up nicely, halving the hole m three, and leaving Ross the winner by two up and one, to play. Rutherford beat Haggitt, five up and four to'play. Cowper playing Horton, got into difficulties at the first hole, which Horton won in five. Each got in good teo shots going to Flagstaff, and Horton, after landing his ball within 3ft of the holo with his second shot, holed out in three. Cowper won tho third hole ii regulation four. The fourth holo was hdved in four, and tho lifth was halved in six after indifferent play by both competitors. The sixth was halved in four, and Cowper won tho seventh by five to his opponent's six. At the eighth each got a good tee shot. Cowper was short of the green with his second, whilst Horton found, the green and won the hole in four. The ninth was halved in five, 0 and Hurton was two up at the turn. At the tenth Cowper mis-hit his tee shot, and Horton won the holo in four. Tipperary. M'Glashan, and Manuka holes wero all baved in bogey. _ Cowper placed his tee shot on the green at Roy's, and won the hole in three. Spion Kop was halved in Eve. Going to Hawthorn both players got on to the green in two. Cowper putted short with his third, while Horton lay dead. Cowper missed his next putt and Horton holed ;n four, winning the hole and match. A medal handicap was played in the forenoon and was won by G. A. Baxter, of Port Chalmers with W. C. Wynne runnerup. A bogey handicap played in the afternoon was won by S. T. A. Scott, with A. Todd runner-up. In this event the scores of the winner and T. A. Hunter were both "all square." but unfortunately tho lattor's cord was irregular and he was disqualified.
