Replying to a deputation to-day, Sir James Allen said tho Supplementary Estimate's .had yet to come- down, and had already mounted up to very much more than the balance available to meet them. It had apparently been hoped by the late Minister of Finance ft hat this (year it would have been possible to reduoo taxation that : was pressing heavily on some industries, but it had not been possible to do so; in fact, so far as he could judge, the possibilities of reducing taxation next year were fairly remote. In these circumstances it -was the duty of the" Government to ascertain what "were tile' most urgent needs of tho country when considering the 'Estimates.
