CITY COUNCIL REPORTS
The following' are the main features of the various committee reports which will come up for consideration at the meeting of the City Council on Wednesday night: — The Works Committee recommends that authority be granted to subsidise the Taieri County Council on a £ for £ basis on all sums that may .be expended by the county on the permanent construction and subsequent maintenance of tho Kaikorai Valley road. Although one mile of this roadway is within the county are<i, the whole road is really the connecting link between the Kaikorai Valley and the Main South road and railway and the borough of Green Island. If the road is put in proper order, much heavy traffic which now traverses city streets will taker the Kaikorai Valley road. The committee also reports that the amendment made by tho Arbitration Court to the award of the general labourers has now been received. Tne rates of wages are increased as under : —Permanent men, " from £2 14s per week, plus 20 per cent, bonus 10s 9id, to a basic weekly rate of £3 ss, plus 5s bonus; casuals, from £2 16s per week, plus 20 per cent., bonus lis 2£d, to a rate equal to £3 0s B£, plus 9s 9£d bonus. Pay-sheets and accounts amounting to £2680 19s 7d have been recommended to the Finance Committee for payment. The Water Committee reports having recommended the Finance Coumittee to pass for payment accounts amounting to £698 17s 6d. The General Committee submits a formal resolution, laid on the table, • covering tho reappointment of _ the vehicle ranks in the city. ■ The reappointments are necessary in order to definitely lav down tho number and classes of vehicles allowed on each rank, and thereby enable the inspector to • • his authority without question in tho matter of filling ranks to their full cjuota. Instructions have been given to invite tenders for slaughtering stock at the abattoirs for a further period of two jears. u ay lij an d accounts amounting to £815 16s 9d have been recommended to the Finance Committeo for payment. The Reserves Committee reports that arrangements have been made for the committee and the Royal Society for the Promotion of the Health of Women and Children to join in promoting a combined garden feto about the month, of February next, the proceeds to be divided equally between the society and the reserves department. Authority has been granted to the superintendent of reserves to proceed with the formation of the children's pluygrotintk s in Kaikorai and Glasgow street respectively as already approved by the council. Paysheets and accounts amounting to £994 8s have been recommended to the Finance Committee for payment. The Tramways Committee reports havinofurther considered the matter of additional remuneration for services rendered by the employees during the peace celebrations. It is now recommended that in addition to the allowance of time and a-half for all > employees working on the Saturday, Sunday and Monday, as already authorised, a further allowance of time and a-half be made to all employees for the Tuesday 'and Wednesday, as during these last two clays the traffic was exceptionally heavy. ' Ihe extra cost will be £135. Instructions have been given for cars leaving the city for St Clair at 4.59, 5.29, and 5.49 to be twopenny minimum faro cars; also for the 5.24 car to the Bay now running as a minimum fare car, to be run as an ordinary car. At the present time the three St. Clair cars referred to and the 5.24 to Tahuna are unduly overcrowded, and the alteration should give relief as far as possible. Authority has been granted to mvite tenders for printing tramway tickets for a further period of one year. Ihe acting manager has been authorised to make a commencement with the "work of removing the centre poles to the sides of the streets.
