Mr Bowden has been a most popular oiiicLT, and ilia many Iriends will teel pleased that he has received promotion in liia transfer to Wellington. 11l consequence of Mr David Hunter's resignation of tho position of deputy controller of shipping in Australia the appointment of a successor is now being considered by tho Federal Government. It is probable (says the Argus) that Mr C. 11. ifughes, manager of tho Union Eteam Ship Company's Melbourne . branch, will be selected to fill tho vacancy. Tho Public Service Commissioner has appointed Mr T. 0. Bishop, A.0.5.M., a graduato of the Otago School of Mines, to iho recently advertised post of inspecting engineer of metalliferous mines to the Department of Mines, Wellington. Tho positin carries a salary of £600 a year and travelling allowances. Miss Dorothy Thompson, who is returning to England after a stay of several years in Dunedin, was entertained by the United Congregational Church Clioir and Ladies' Club (of both of which she was an active member) at a. social hold in tho church hall. Reference was made bv tho pastor, tho president of the Ladies' Club, and the choirmaster to the unobtrusive but highly valued services rendered_ by Miss Thompson as a member of both institutions, and best wishes for a succcssful journey wero expressed. As mementos of her stay in Dunedin and of tho appreciation and goodwill of her fellow workers an autograph album and a handbag woro presented to Miss Thompson, who acknowledged the gifts and good wishes in a few appropriate sentences.
