THE WANGANUI HARBOUR
OARRIVAL OF NEW DREDGE. GREAT THINGS EXPECTED. (Pee United Press Association.) WANGANUI, September 14. A long-awaited and' important event in the history of Wanganui eventuated on Saturday afternoon, when tho arrival of tin new dredgo ICaione (which, being interpreted, means " Sandoater") was celebrated. 'fho dredgo is of tho most modern type, and specially adapted for local harbour requirements. She will be employed in making a deep-sea. harbour at Castlccliff and in deepening tho river channel to tho town. Great tilings aro expected of her. Ihe chairman of tho Harbour Board estimates that in a month there will be another foot of water in tho river channel, which will enable ships which now unload at Castlccliff to come right up to the town wharf; and work will be continued until the maximum depth is obtained. The Kaione is what is known as a trailing snotion dredger of the stern well type, with a capacity of 600 cubic yards, and capable of dredging to a depth of 40 feet. 'Jho harbour works_ are to bo pushed on rapidly, for the board is now in a strong financial position, having just raised a loan of £150,0C0. The dredge arrived off the bar at 5 o'clock yesterday morning, and the official entry into_ port took "place in the afternoon. The public function of tho board taking over the dredge will bo held at Castlccliff. The Kaione is practically ready for work, and a start will lx> mado next week, when the tide is suitable.
