WISHES BY-ELECTION

MR HENDERSON RETURNED. Prew Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, September 12. In the Widnes by-election, for -which Mr F. M. B. Fisher* was a candidate, Mr Arthur Henderson -was elected.—A. and N.Z. Cable. (Received Sept. 14, at 5.5 p.m.) The -voting at the election resulted Arthur Henderson (Labour) ... 11,404 F.M.B. Fisher (Coalition Unionist) 10,417. PRESS COMMENTS. CAUSE OF MR FISHER'S DEFEAT. MR HENDERSON'S RETURN WELCOMED. LONDON, September 13. - (Received Sept. 15, at 1 a.m.) The newspapers agree that Labourites are entitled to claim that the result of the Widnes election supports the demand for the withdrawal from Russia and the nationalisation of mines. All welcome Mr Henderson's return to the House of Commons, which, the Daily Telegraph points out, the December election robbed of too many whose abilities and influence would have greatly added to its authority. The Daily Telegraph adds that Widnes has hitherto always been Conservative, but the new franchise and the re-airangeroent of boundaries led to the belief that trade unionism was now predominant. The Morning Post supports Mr Fishers protest that the lack of Government assistance and the refusal of an authoritative statement regarding the Russian Ambassadorship practically gave the seat awav A. and N.Z. Cable. At the general election last year Colonel W. Hall-Walker (Coalition Unionist) defeated T. Williamson (labour) by 11515 votes to 7821. '
