MINING.
A further five feet has been driven on the mam reef in No. 2 iovel of the Waitangi mine. The reef has changed considerably in appearance in the last few foet, the present face being- mullocky, with a Iwnd of hard flinty quartz on the footvvall nde. The prospects of a mining revival in the Auckland district goldfields aro not remote (savs too Herald), although there arc factors which at present militate against any increased activity in tho industry on an extensive scale. Some of these hindrances would be removed wire the Government to undertake tho revision of tho present legislation and its accompanying regulations so as to encourage and foster enterprise which has for too long been discouraged Iho outlook would bo brighter, moreover* were vigrous efforts made "with the aid of tho State to unearth now fields in untried and unprotected areas. So far as tho future of tho industry is concerned, the best prospects of stability are oonfipxl to Ohinemuri, in which tho three principal bullion-producing concerns nro situated—namely, the Waihi and Waihi Grand Junction mines at Waihi, and the ialisman mine at Karangahafe?. At Coromandel a resumption of operations in tho famous old property, the Old Hauraki, will shortly be undertaken, and a few other propositions in the same district aro bcin" Worked by syndicates or small companies! At Thames tho entire hope of any sort of a revival lies in the direction of fresh discoveries in a new portion of tho field.
