MUNICIPAL CORPORATIONS
CONFERENCE CONCLUDED. (Pee United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, September 12. The Municipal Conference concluded today. Tho Mayor of Wellington (Mr Luke) was elcctod president. It was decided that the vice-presidents and tho executive be the same as before. This morning tho Municipal Corporations Act Amendment Bill, introduced bv Mr Luke, was dealt with. There was some discussion on the clause proposing to give power to united boroughs to raise all rates by way of a general rate, and it was decided to recomme-nd the insertion of a clause providing that in tho matter of special loans a poll bo taken if 5 per pent, of tho ratepayers desire it. A deputation from the Municipal Conference waited upon tho Prime Minister and Minister of Internal Affairs to-day. Tho speakers indicated that the remits passed by the conference would be forwarded to tho Ministers concerned, with the hope that action would be taken on tho lines indicated. In reply, Mr Massey said he had not had an opportunity of reading the. remits yet, but would do so with the objcct of making tho?e of which Parliament, approved into legislation as soon as possible. Ho knew from previous experience that the remits passed by the oonferonco were us"nl! v received with approval by the Parliament and Government of t.ho country, for they contained exceedingly suitable* suggestions. The Hon. Mr Hine snokc briefly, indicating that he would be glad to avail hirns-olf of the assistance offered by the conference.
