GENERAL NEWS

The fortnightly meeting of the Royal Oak Lodge, CJ.A.O.D., was held on Monday. Bro. A. Logie presided. Invitations were received from the Bay Lodge to a card and quoit evening, and from Otago to hear a lecture by Mr Johnston on " Economics." One member was initiated, and one was proposed. Officers of the R.A.C. attended to conduct an A.D. competition, in which the following competed: Bro. J. W&a.therston (Pride of Mornington), Bros. A. Ockwell and D. M'Donald (Enterprise), Bros. W. R. Hudson and T. Hudson (Royal Oak), and Bro. Walker (Pride of Mornington). After a spirited competition Bro. Walker proved to be the winner by half-a-point, with Bro. Ockwell second P.D.P. Bro. Rcid and P.D.P. Bro. J. Osmond acted as judges. It was resolved that next meeting be a ladies' night. The South Dunedin Y.M.C.A. Scouts held a social on Thursday evening, when a large number of parents and friends gathered to show their interest in scout work. A varied programme was rendered, including musical and elocutionary items, and displays by a team from tile City Troop, under i-cou t master Inglis in ambulance and physical drill.' Scoutmaster Burney was present to examine Leaders Smith and Wilson (dancing) and Scout Duncan (violin) for the entertainers' badge. Mr Drew (general secretary of the Y.M.C.A.) addressed the parents on the work of the association and the need and opportunity for extension in South Dunedin. Ho explained the connection between Y.M.C.A. work and scout work, and congratulated them oil havinp a. good troop in. which the boys could interest- themselves. Six more parents were enrolled for the committee. During the evening supper was handed round, and the social was brought to a close with a vote of thanks to those who had worked so hard in. the interest of the boys, and a motion expressing good wishes for the continued prosperity of the trooD.
