September 12. e tvt Magistrate's Court, Harriet Baker •of X\e\v Brighton. made an application to i V6 -d i liame her son, Frederick Stanley Baker, removed from the defaulters' list* The applicant stated that her son was a seafarer, who was minus the sight of one eye. He had enlisted, but was told at the recruiting' office to continue at sea, as he was doing his bit there equally as'well as if he went to the front. He had been serving in transports, and when last heard of, three months ago, was about to leave German East Africa. The applicant had received his ballot papers, but hud returned them to the Defence Office. Major Oonway, representing the Defence Department, submitted that the application was not in order, because the Act stated that a man could make application to have his name removed, but in the present case tho applicant admitted that her son bad not approached her in the matter. Ultimately- the case was adjourned for a fortnjght, to allow of tho production of further evidence.
