Tlie sea was beaten into hi<r a fury, and many small vessels in the bav experienced considerable difficulty in roaching port. About dusk an unknown four-masted schooner put in an appearance in the bav but siio iias not been seen since. It 'is believed that tho captain, after picking up his bearings, managed to beat out to sea again in spite- of tho exceptional lurv of hie storm. The Home liner Otira, which was in tho roadstead, dragged her anchor a couple of ship s lengths, but redo th e storm saieiy. | The coastal steamer Tuatn ran ashore «vt ! the mouth of tho Mohafca River. Steps aro being taken to unload tho vessel. A coo-llv ! portion is already off. y Th ? Arahura, despito a dangerous sea remained at the breakwater. Tho g-ale caused much minor dama/'o in JNapier, fruit trees EufTsruig badly. °
