OLUTHA COUNTY COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting was held on Friday afternoon; present—Ors T. Maginneas (chairman), Jas. Begg, John Christie, H. E. Steel, J. Edwards, Jas. Cuuuning, A. North, A. M'lntyre, and H. Morrison. ENGINEER'S , EEI'OHT. Tho Engineer reported -that the new Ciydovale 'punts had been completed, and were working satisfactorily. A start had been made to erect a new concrete culvert near Mr Humphrey's, on Puerua-Roma-hapa main road. Tho Balclutha to Port Molynoux road had been flooded, and tho road had beon closed for soveral days. Tho Hooding of the road was due to tho buckwator from the Clutha River. Regarding D. Murray's and others request for deviation of road leading to Messrs Murray and M'Kenzie's properties at Clydevalo, an inspection was made, and a new lino was selected and agreed to by both parties.—Cr Begg considered that, as it was now the beginning of,tho season, they should have a comprehensive report on the roads and the work required in order to allocate their expenditure. They could not lay off this yojir'a work unless they had these reports. After discussion, it was resolved that the engineer provide a comprehensive report on the bridges. FINANCE. The financial statement showed that the receipts for the month totalled £207 17s 7d and the expenditure £2007 8a Bd. OORBESPONDENCE. The Hon. D. H. Guthrie, Minister of Lands, wrote regarding rates on Clifton Settlement, that ho had given very careful consideration to tho question of paying rates to the local authority on lands purchased for discharged soldier settlement and not disposed of, and had decided that the Government could not undertake to pay rates in such cases. Tho Secretary, Otago Motor Club, wrote in reply to the council that the club supplied notice boards for important rood junctions for erection by county councils: No charge was mado for them, and it was done in the interests of motorists. Mr A. S. Malcolm, M.P., wrote that he had written to the Minister asking him to gazette a quarter of an acre of the Clydevalo reserve as a fallen soldiers' memorial. Tho writer asked that the council define tho section it required.—Cr Morrison moved--;"That the member for the riding and engineer arrange with the Peace Memorial Committee to Irave the survey carried out."—Carried. The Town Clerk, Balclutha, wrote applying for payment of the following amounts promised on behalf of the council towards tho peace celebrations:—Richardson Riding. £5; Clutha Riding, £5; South Molyneux Riding, £2 10s ;—total, £12 10s.—O North said that South Molynoux had not promised contribution, and should be out out.— Crs Christie and Edwards stated that the other two amounts were correct, and these two were passed for payment. The Clerk, Bruce County Council, wrote that his council had resolved at its last meeting to request that tho openings on ,the Balclutha traffio bridge between the - footway and the traffio way be closed up, as it was considered that these openings were a source of danger to children.— Bruce County Council to be informed that this council could not agree to the request Miss A. Logan, Greenvale, and two othsr ratepayers, wrote asking , that the council make an inspection of the Pomaliaka River at Kelso as early as possible to eee what could be done to alter the present course of the river.—Tuapeka Council to be -written to with a view to securing a Government engineer to inspect the proposed work.

Mr A. V. King, secretary Farmers' Union, Clydevale, wxoto that he had been instructed to ask the council to make 'application to the Government to erect a traffic bridge over tho river at the Clyd«vale-•G-reenfieM punt.'—Cr Morrison moved that the request be supported.—Seconded by Or Edwards and carried.

Mr_ W. S. Thomson, Warepa, wrote again drawing attention to the state of tho cutting that had been washed away by tho Kaihiku Stream when in flood, near the Glenfalloch sheep dip.—The fund available to be spent on the road as requested. Mr D. Murray, Clydevale, wrote that he was prepared to give the land for road deviation as pointed out through part of his, Clydevale property leading to the lower Pomohaka bridge, in exchange for an equal amount of land now forming the present road. —The engineer to haya the survey and exchange of the land carried out.

Mr A. K. Campbell, Port Molyneux, wrote asking that tho land fund money bo spent on the Nugget Bum road leading to his section. He also understood that there was a grant of £100 to bo spent on the road at the Ahuriri end. If that was formed and a good track made ho could get timber in, and it would also bo an easy outlet to the Owaka sales.—Cr North moved that ths engineer have tho first part of tho •work done, and the Public Worlds Department be asked to spend the £100 grant."— Seconded by Cr Edwards and carried. Mr James VTyber, Hina Hina, wrote requesting application to be made to tho Government for £100 for his road, as the grades wore very steep.—Application approved, on the motion of the chairman.

GENEEAL. It, was resolved that notices be sent to all property holders allowing gorse to grow on the road to clear the same The chairman and Crs North and Christie were nominated as members of the South. Otago Hospital Committee, and it -was resolved that the member of the district be asked to support the Bill in the House. It was resolved that tho work of widening on M'Kcnzie's road, Glenomaru, be done. The following resolutions were carried:— " That specifications for the forming and metalling of Dunv«gan road from foot of hill to Drmvegan be prepared for next meeting." "That the clerk apply to the Government for a grant of £500 to subsidise a similar sum to be epent by tho council on the Balolutha-Arthurton road in repairing damage done by the excessive motor cat traffic which lias followed the restriction of the railway Service." " That the engineer bo authorised to expend £30 on gravel on Benio-Waikaka Valley road." "That the engineer call tenders for gravelling on Seddon road, starting* at Quin's gate, to Mr Crump's gate, about 30 chains of grovel to come from Kelso." "That tho engineer report at next meeting on the condition of tho' fish ponds road, and give estimate of cost of necessary repairs." "That tenders be\called for the quarrying and breaking and placing of 500 yards of maintenance metal between Clinton and the hill above the upper bridge in the Popotunoa Gorge—namely, between the bndf^e." "That the engineer report on metalling on the road giving access to Loehindorb smn 11 grazing runs from the Clinton-Owaka road." • "That tenders be called for forming and metalling about 15 chains immediately to the south of tho lower Willowburn bridge on the Main South road."

That contracts be advertised in tho Otago Daily Times, as well as in local papers, for the following two months."
