The local police office was advised from Hampdeii last night that Mr William Walt. ter riey, aged w years, had died on Sunday night, as tho result of a motor car accident, "i'he accident occurred at Kartigi, the car going down an embankment and • turning a. somersault. It appears that Mr Hey, accompanied by his wile- and son, left Duhedin by motorcar on Sunday morning with the object of travelling- to Oamoru to attend the funeral - of his late stepfather (Mr Eyre Evans). In' addition to the above, the car contained a • driver and a passenger, who went as far aa Waikouaiti. As far as can be gathered I there were several stoppages on the way, owing to the car not running well. While ' negotiating the hill beyond Trotter's Creek' the car got into a rut on the side of the' road, and the driver found it necessary to increase the power in order to extricate the . machine. This was accomplished, but the car then went over an embankment on the other side of the road, and. after turning' a somersault, landed on its wheels again. Mr Hey was cut about the head, and one' . of his ribs was broken, penetrating one pi- - his lungs. He was taken to the residence' of Mr Trotter, and , the services of Dr- : Thomas, of Palmerston, were secured without delay. Mr Hey.died a few hours later, however. An inquest was opened yesterday at Hampden. before -, Mr Nicolson (acting coroner), but was adjourned to enable the [■ evidence of the driver of the car and the passenger who went to Waikouaiti to be ob- : : tained, and also to permit of an examina- ■ tion of the car beinjj made by an expert, 'ihe inquiry wiil be resumed oji Friday. The deceased, who resided at 151 Queen .. street, was a married man with four children, and • was employed as a draper , ! assistant at Messrs Mofiison.
