ALLEGED BREAKING AND ENTERING.
SMART ARREST EFFECTED.
As the result of a smart piece of wot]: by detective Hammerly, Sergeant Nelson, and Constable Wootton a resident of Green Island was arrested yesterday on charges of breaking and entering and theft. A telephone message was received by Detective HaminerJy at 10.40 yesterday morning intimating that some time between & p.m. and 9 p.m. on Friday Mr James Dunlop s house, on the Main road from Green Island to Brighton, had been broken into. Accompanied by Sergeant Nelson, of tho district office, ho at once hired a motor car, and set out for Green Island, where they met Constable Wootton. The party then drove to Mr Dunlop , s house, where they learned that a lady's gold watch, some othor jewellery, and £8 6s 8d in cash had been stolen. They gathered as many particulars of the burglary as possible, and following up the clue which had been obtained, they effected an arrest with dramatic suddenness in loss than an hour from tho commencement of tho investigation. The whole of the stolon property was recovered Tho person arrested is a miner, who lives at Green Island v.-iih his wife and thr<>« children. It is understood that he will admit tho offence when lie is brought before rho court this morning. Mr Dunlop is secretary and treasurer of the Green Island Miners Union, and the money stolen comprised union funds. The man who Ins been arrested attributes his lapse to th« aftermath of the strike, and although he has been oarnmg good wages he states that Do has several large accounts outstanding
