CAPPING CARNIVAL
Saturday was the final night of the capping carnival at His Majesty's, and the students again had a crowded house to witness their, entertainment, every item of which was greeted with applause. The medley of grotesquely costumed undergraduates that thronged the stage presented a most weird effect. The splendid team work in the chorusse showed that they did not all have merely " walking-on" parts, and in this respect they showed a distinct advantage over previous carnivals. In th-p farcoß, _ various celebrities, notorieties, and nonentities had the mirror of "public opinion " held up to them with a candour that was often more cruel than kind. Some of the makes-up w«re very passable resemblances of the people they were intended to represent, and others were not so good, but the pointed patter of the players left no doubt as to whom they were intended to portray. A few were distinctly gauche, but the majority trod the boards with the assurance of an Irving, or rather a Crummies. Thrir enjoyment of their part sometimes got the better of their gravity though this was never demanded for long' In some students the absence of stage fright was rather obvious. Perhaps the most enjoyable part of the programme was the singing of the qtrintet, ev>sry member of whjch had a sorvioable voice, and sang his ditties very tunefully. There was nothing ofßyrcsnio subtlety in any of the referencee made, however, and most of the jokee were broad and unmistakable. In the songs— both solo and chorus—the excellent orchestra aided not a little, and all due credit must b<? given it for what was largely the spade work, both at the rehearsals and at the pirblio performances. Tho carnival, after being five years in abeyance on account of the war, nas come through ,ts post-war season with much eckt and it is to ba hopnd that the stunts will bo able to hold their annual festival in future uninterrupted.
