The monthly meeting of the Macandrew Road School Committee was attended by Messrs Wright (chairman), Burt, Dalton, Fraser, and Al'lndoe. The head master reported that the number on the roll was 669, and the average attendance 614. The report from the inspectors was received, and it was decided to congratulate the head master and staff on the good work. A vote of thanks was passed to Messrs Wright and King for donations of fruit, and to Messrs R. Hudson and Co., and the Columbia Tea Company, for lollies and tea for the peace celebrations. Arrangements axe completed for supplying tea for the scholars who bring their lunches. At the annual meeting of the Maori Hill Band the president (Mr A. Walker, M.P.) said that the past year had been the most critical period ever experienced by the band. Owing to so many members having left to take part in the war the membership had been much reduced, and the lack of a permanent conductor had also militated against progress. The position at present was,_ however, most encouraging, for the services of Mr J. Dickson had been secured as conductor. The financial position -was satisfactory, there being a credit balance of £50 5s Id. The. following officers were elected:—President, Mr A. Walker, M.P.; vice-presidents—Messrs J. Horn, O. Balk R. E. All Nations Lodge, U.A.0.D., held their annual church parade on Sunday in Holy Trinity Church, Port Chalmers. The Grand president, with his officers and board from Dunedin, attended. An appropriate service wan presided over by the Rev. H. S. Bishop. There was a large congregation of lodge members and others. The Boys' High School Band played the parade to church.
The monthly meeting of the Musselburgh School Committee was held on Tuesday evening. Mr Jacobsen presided. The head master's report stated that there were 662 pupils on the roll, and the average attendance for July had been 616. The bank deposits for July were £24 lls 2d and the ■withdrawals £7 15s, leaving a balance of £260 14s. The inspectors' examination of the school took placo on July 24-25, with very satisfactory results The head master (on behalf of the children) thanked the members of committee and tho ladies who contributed to the enjoyable entertainment given to the children on July 21. As the subsoil in the Musselburgh School grounds is unsuitable for tree planting, the committee decided to approach the St. Kilda Borough Council to ascertain if tree-plant-ing could bo done in co-operation ~ with that body. The clerk was instructed to write to the Education Board protesting against the holding of the recent examinations immediately after the holidays. Accounts amounting to £25 8s 3d were passed for payment. Messrs Priest and Adess ■were appointed visitors for September.
