Cable. . THE WINNIPEG STRIKE. READING THE RIOT ACT. CHARGE OF MOUNTED POLICE. ' OTTAWA, June 21. The strikers at Winnipeg, in defiance of the Mayor's orders, attempted to hold a procession. They burnt a tramcar. The Riot Act was then read, and mounted police charged in the face of some shooting and showers of bricks and stones. One striker was killed. Three hundred arrests have been made.—Reuter. AUSTRALIAN SHIPPING STRIKE. PROSPECTS! OF SETTLEMENT GLOOMY. SYDNEY, June 23. Prospects of a settlement of the seamen's strike are gloomy. The men announce that they are determined to continue the strike until their claims are granted. IDLENESS IN SOUTH AUSTRALIA. FACTORIES CLOSING DOWN. ADELAIDE, June 23. Many thousands of people have been rendered idle as a result of the shipping strike. Factories are closing down, and many firms are reducing their staffs. THE MOUNT MORGAN MINE. PREPARATIONS FOR STATE MANAGEMENT. SYDNEY, June 23. Mr Ryan, Queensland Premier, is now in Sydney taking steps to reopen the Mount Morgan mine in order to arrest the widespread distress resulting from its Closing.
