MR ASQUITH'S CAMPAIGN. OPPOSITION TO IMPERIAL PREFERENCE. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, June 19. Mr Asquith opened his* Freetrade campaign at Leeds. He declared that the Freetrade r system had triumphantly borne the supreme test of the greatest war in history. The Chancellor of 'the Exchequer's (Mr A. Chamberlain's) minute and pettifogging proposals for Imperial preference were the first instalment of Protection, which was stealthily crossing the threshold of the fiscal citadeL We needed the utmost economy in administration and the greatest possible development of production, and it would be a mistake to meet such emergency by hampering British trade with tariffs. He appealed to the country to reaffirm its allegiance to Freetrado principles.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
