CANTERBURY COLLEGE

GRADUATION CEREMONY, SPEECH BY HON. MR RUSSELL. (Pes United Press Association.) UHRISTCHURCH, June 20. * " The ceremony of tbs reception of gradu* ates at Canterbury College for the yeaife 1915-19 took place to-day, being preceded' by the students' carnival, which attracted much notice. In the course of an address the Hon. Mr {Russell referred to the fact that Canterbury College stood at the head of the educational institutions in Now Zealand, and had given to the world such an illustrious scientist aa Sir Ernest Rutherford. He traced the" history of the University of Now Zealand;and paid a tribute to those who had eet aside land as an endowment for education purposes. Canterbury College received only £2000 from the Government and would soon have to ask for a largerdirect measure of State assistance. He regretted that more advantage was not taken of the Commerce chair, for. upon training in this class of knowledge much of the future strength and prosperity of the dominion would depend. .He consideied th«rt the time had come when the status of tha University itself would have to be considered. He belie red it could stand alone. The Prime Manistee had stood sido by 6ide with the statesmen" of the world' upon equal terms, but still the University had to send its examination papers abroad to bo adjudicated upon. To encourage;' - education its posts should be reduced to" a limit so that all classes could partake of lia advantages. .Mr Hussell concluded by * specially addressing tha graduates, pointing! out that the advantages of education that they had gained should be used not only for their own good, but for the good of tho country.
