THE WEATHER

SNOW AND SLEET SHOWERS. Snow and sleet showers, driven by a cold south-westerly wind, commenced to fall early yesterday morning, and continued at intervals during the day. The actual quantity of moisture which fell however, was not great, as Mr Jacobeen' engineer at the pumping station, states that the register on his water gauge from 9 o'clock on Monday morning till 9 o'clock yesterday morning was only ,880ih. A heavy coating of snow has now accumulated on the hills round the city. The local railway department reports that no damage has been caused to the railways, and that all the services are running as usual.

ROXBURGH, May 27. The fine mild weather that has' prevailed for the last month broke on Sunday, when light showers occurred off and on 'durin~ the day. On Monday morning the temperature fell considerably, and cold showers of rain and snow were frequent.
