FIRES IN MOSGIEL. TO THE EDITOR. Sill, —I think some notice should betaken of the frequent outbreaks of fires in Mosgiel. Four weeks ago the brigade was called out to suppress a fire in a stable. The following week it was called out for a stack on fire; then again for another stack a few nights afterwards; and last night an unoccupied building was on fire. It is not likely that all these outbreaks happen by accident, and the inhabitants of Mosgiel are becoming very anxious that some inquiries be made. —I am, etc., Mosgisl, May 26. Anxious. PRIVATE SIDINGS IN MAIN STREETS. TO THE EIHTOH. Sir, —Will you kindly procure and publish for the information of the public:—(l) What rent is received by the corporation from the Crown Milling Company for the privilege of using the siding jin Princos streot 6uuth?{2) What is a fair estimate for extra wear and tear to the tramcars by that siding being there? (3) What is the estimated loss of time through tramcars haying to slow down before crossing the siding? (4) Ii there not sufficient engineerin b skill iii Dnnedin to invent some means of lessening the jolt the cars receive at present in crossing? If soma of the members of the Tramways Committee were to stand there for an hour after dark, and listen to the bumping of the overloaded cars, they would have some little idea how tremendously it must add to the war and tear. —I am, etc., Inquieeb. [The payment received by the corporation for the use of this siding is £52 per annum. It is impossible either to estimate approximately the wear and tear of tramway rolling stock at the siding or to cornnute the logs of time in the running of' the cars owing to their having to slow down in pasrng tho crass-raik. —Ed.
