MOTOR TRUCKS FOR CORPORATION USE. TO THE EDITOESnt, —The Works Committee of the Dunedin City Council recommends the purchase of two Wliite petrol or motor tracks a{ £1488 each. As we are in. the motor business, and also large ratepayers, wo think we ought to point out that this price is far too much to pay for this class of motor truck. The " experts " of the City Council do not recommend this purchase, but " suggost" that the purchase be made, so the responsibility of recommending the purchase is thrown on the Works Committee, which may knerw little about the value of these machines. We know the values, and we assert that the price to be paid is too much for these trucks, and would be too much to pay for five-ton trucks* which would be almost double the capacity of the tracks the council propose to purchase. The Society of Automobile Engineers in America rate both trucks and cars made in the United States, such rating being for the purpose of fixing the horse-power and capacity. On turning up the latest information given in the trade journals wo find the S.A.E. rating of these trucks is only three tons, and as the American tern. is only 20001b it follows tSat these so-called 3-£ ton tracks are rated! at 2 tons ISycwt, or 60001b. Tho horse-power of these ' trucks is given as 22.5—that, is the S.A.E. - rated horse-power, and this is exactly the horsepower of the " tin Lizzie," otherwise known as the Ford car. If this is the horse-power of the trucks which the City Council propose to purchase, all we have to say b that the ratepayers will not be getting value for their money. The members of' the Works Committee are welcome to look over our trade journals, and satisfy tltemselvea that the fig-ores wo give are in these journals. On the 22nd April we wrote to the town clerk quoting 4 ton trucks, equipped with hydraulic hoists and_ steel dump bodies, controlled from the driver's seat, for the sum of £1175 net, and 5 ton trucks, with similar equipment, for £100 more, of £1275 net, delivered and complete and ready for the road. Our trucks are rated by the S.A.E. as tons, and the horse-power at 32.4, which means that we offered to supply any number of trucks having J, ton more capacity, and about 10 horse-power more engine power than the trucks recommended, wliilo oar price is- £273 per truck lesß than tho price tho council propose to pay. —Wo are, etc., 27.
