TECHNICAL COLLEGE MANAGERS.

The • monthly meeting of the Technical College Managers was bold yesterday aiternoon; present—Mosses T. Scott (chairman), Duthie, Hellyer, M'Kinlay, Rosevear, Wallace, and tho Hoa. G. M, Thomson, The High School Board of Governors forwarded a copy of a committee's report in reference to salaries, eta, of secondary eouool teachers.—The Board of Managers resolved to co-operate with.the High Schools Board in the Kshoino suggested. The Director of Education wrote with regard to the vocational training of discharged soldiers, stating that tho department had been informed by the Repatriation Department thai proposals for the establishment of classes had been opposed by the Repatriation Board. Authority had been given by the board for the expenditure of £250 per annum for a commercial instructor, £250 for an engineering instructor, £250 for a woolclassing instructor, and £200 for tools and equipment. The Repatriation Department had asked that steps be taken to commenco the classes as early as possible. The Education Department was prepared to cooperate m any reasonable way. Since tho Repatriation Board was bearing tho whole cost of_ the instruction no payments by way of capitation would be made —Received. The Appointments Committee reported having considered the applications received for the position of day janitor and cleaner, suggested that the position be given to one of tho following mentioned, whoso names were arranged alphabetically >—Joseph Cook, William M'Kay, Wilfred Russell, F. J. Styles, Andrew T. Wilson. The report continued: " For the position of commercial instructor for classes undertaken at the request of the Defence Department, Miss Elsio Owen is the only suitable applicant, and is recommended for appointment on the understanding that her permanent position is tho one that she at present holds on the staff, and that this special work is undertaken by arrangement with the director. Of the applicants for the position of engineering instructor, two are regarded as quite suitable, and tho committee, taking account of the work already done by Mr° Thomas Conly as teacher of the evening classes, recommends that ne bo appointed. Twelve applications have been received for the position of instructor of woolclassing, and tho committee, after carefully examining their credentials and experience, considers the three applicants—Robert Gibb, Joseph b Lynch, and R, Throp—to be the most suitable, and suggests that the committee be aothcrised to make the appointment from this list.—The report -was adopted, the name of James Dey being added to the applications for the position of day janitor and cleaner. It was left to tho committee to make a final selection, preference to be given to returned soldiers, other things being equal It was also decided that the successful applicant be jnformed that he ■would be expected to join the superannuation scheme, in which case the board •would pay half fees.

The Finance Committee's report, recommending the payment of accounts and salaries amounting to £1003, was adopted.. The Agricultural Committee reported:— The lat© owners of our Wakari property are making little progress with the removal of their stock from the farm, and the director has been instructed to give Mr Howden formal notice to remove any of his property lie considers of value not later than the 31st inst. Mr Mandono has been instructed to prepare plans of htrtmerrte or open air cubicles suitable for the housing of boys on the farm. It is intended to work these in connection with the house on the farm as a hostel for boys.

The Works Committee reported, in connection with the Eurt HaEL, that quotations for the supply of 400 chairs had been invited, but the committee was not prepared to recommend the purchase of the chairs at the prices submitted. It considered that application should be made to the department for a grant-inlaid, and a further endeavour made to obtain the chairs. Prices had been invited for the supply of tables or desks and seats. or chairs suitable for soldiers' classes, and the committee recommended that the orders be given to -those offering the best terms.—Adopted, The Director, reporting , on tho establishment of special classes for returned soldiers, stated that the establishment of these classes was making the question of additional elass room accommodation troublesome. With a little inconvenience these extra classes could at present be satisfactorflv arranged, but should there be a corresponding increase of pupils next year, difficulties would arise, and, in his opinion, they should at once make preparations for such an emergency.—Adopted; It_ was resolved that the need of tho completion of the west wing of the college be urged upon the Government.
