JAPANESE SHIPBUILDING. A report has beam issued by the Japanese Government of the -work of the committee which has been conducting an investigation mto the standardisation of freight boate. It js claimed that the adoption will facilitate toe supply of materials and enhance the efficiency of yards, so that the cost of ehipa •mil be considerably reduced, Tyues of ■ freighters are divided into broad ofasees— ono for war and the other for peace require- • ments. WaT-time types are four in number built to make good probable losses in tonnage. All boats built according to these standards, the committee estates, would be very simple in construction, butnrnch ie sacrificed in other respects. The lypeei for peace time are 16, including six Bpecaa descriptions. In drawing up these plana the, committee has considered the weight of bodies, the consumption of fuel and other points, and has avoided too much uniformity m construction. Builders are also allowed to introduce, some variations : n their plans of building. In the oase of the war type boats, standaid sizes of materials JKf rt!""^ e iT to A 3 ' £t ie recommended that t> steel for the bodies should be within , 30ft in length and 78in in width. Boilers are required to bo strictly uniform. I n the case of the peace type boats, materials are clarified into SI. Only in the length and math of body material and boilers is uniformity observed. Outlining the present irregularity m materials, the committee states that ee the result of inspection of 17 boats now under construction much irregularity has been discovered in the ehapes used. In Van, materials of 91 different sizes were used. Iβ e boat of 12,000 tons, 51 different sizee were dweoverea in tu*. Even in. a steamer of 2000 tons 21 different eraos were observed After gmng a minute description of the different types, the committee udviees the Government ftret to take measurea to induce builders fe, adopt the standards. The first TOoannneadation 13 to adopt them by legielo. tjon or other measures. Secondly, the Gov eminent is recommended to give "bounties or compenetstioii to builders for tihe adoption of BtaMdards.
