A PHOSPHATE ISLAND
NEW ZEALAND V. AUSTRALIA. QUESTION OF MANDATORY CONTROL. MR HUGHES ADAMANTINE. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. PARIS, March 14. (Received March .16, at 5.5 p.m.) Mr J. Fraser, representative of the New Zealand Press Association, states that the question whether New Zealand shares'with the commonwealth the control of Nauru Island is still unsolved. Its value lies in the phosphate deposits, and the agricultural requirements of both claimants make its joint nse desirable. Mr Hughes insists on sole control by the commonwealth, and mutual arrangement appears remote. It is, therefore, possible that Britain may remove the cause of the heart-burnings by accepting the mandate herself.—A. and! N.Z. Cable. Nauru, or Pleasant' Island, is a small coral island in the Pacific a little south of the equator, in 167deg E., and just within the German sphere of influence. It has a population of about 1000.
