UNIVERSITY COUNCIL

_ Tho ordinary meeting of tho University Council was held yesterday afternoon; present—the Rev. A. Cameron (Chancellor), Dr H. Linjo Ferguson, the Hon. T. Mao Gibbon, Messrs W. Downio Stewart, M.P., J. C. Stephens, W. J. MorrelL W. Buday, John Roes, and J. H. Walker. On the motion of the Chancellor, it was decided to forward a resolution of sympathy to Dr Church regarding the death of his ■wife. Tho Chancellor extended a very hearty welcome to Mr Downie Stewart, and expressed the hope that he would now bo able to attend many of their meetings.—(Applause.) REPORTS. The . Finance Committee reported that at its meeting on January 2d the registrar presented the following statement oi receipts and expenditure as from December 27 to January 2b: —Receipts, £1876 4s 8d; pay;ments, £13339 3s 3d; balance as per pass book, £965 Is lid; balance as per cash book (debit), £2339 2s 6d. In connection with Mr Skinner's appointment as lecturer in ethnology it was recommended that his salary be increased to £425 for 1919, and to £4-50 lor each succeeding year, provided ho undertook the librarianshii) of tho Hooken Library in addition to his other duties. Tho Education Department wrote on December 19 stating that payment of subsidy for the purchase of blook in Hanover 6treet was held over in tho meantime, as also was the payment of a subsidy on the donation of £8000 to the Medical SchooL Tho letter .was received, and it was resolved that tho Chancellor and Dr Ferguson be requested to wait on the Minister of Education with referenoo to theso subsidies. Professor Waters wrote renewing his application for additional remuneration. It was resolved to recommend the council to increase Professor Watere's salary to £600 without students' fees, the council also to retain half the fees earned by Professor Waters for public assays and that an agreement bo drawn up embodying these conditions. The committee recommended tho council to increase Dr Drennan's salary to £800 as from January 1, 1919. It was agreed by tho committee to renew, the university debentures, £7000, held by the Trustees Executors and Agency Company interest being payable at the rate of 5| per cent—The Chancellor moved the adoption rrJr 0 report > motion being carried. .The Works Committee recommended that the tender (£SB) of Messrs Mauley and I£east for asphalting in the University grounds be accepted. Mr. Anscombe reported—(l) that the Home Science contracts were in arrear owing to bad weather and the scarcity of labour; (2) that the asphalting would be completed before the end of February; (3) that he had had a sample of rough-casting done on Professor Jack's house. The report was received, and it was resolved that tho ivy should b<s removed from all the professors' houses, but thai the matter of further repairs to them should stand in abeyance. The chairman was authorised to act m the matter of repairing the fence between Dr' Benham's and Professor Thompeon s houses. The committee considered the installation of electric light in the museum : and resolved to .accept the price of the , National Electrio Company {£28 8s) — Adopted.

Mowat out of 12 applicants, as librarian.— The was adopted on the motion of Mr Morrell.—Mr Walker said he wished to enter a protest, not against the appointment, but against the method in which it _was made.
