NEW TANK ENGINE

Mr E. E. Lucy, the chiefs mechanical engineer of tho New South Wales railways, has designed a small tender, which, attached to a main-lino locomotive (with its tender romoved, of course), converts this class of engine very cheaply and conveniently into a tank ongine. In on article' contributed by Mr Lucy to tho Engineer (London), ho says in regard to tho tender:—"lt was deagned by order of tho present Chief Coirmrissioncr (Mr James Frasor) to provide a tender which would permit an absolutely perfect outlook for tho driver and fireman, and at tho same timo fit a tender locomotive, to fulfil all the_ functions of a lank engine, and thereby avoid tho creation of another olass of engine on those railways, ATI that has to bo done is to take a tender engine from any of the 500 we possess, and afcteoh it to one of these email tenders, and it becomes at onec a tame engine, suitable for doubleended trips to the harbour or docks, for shunting in. n-arshalling yards, and-pushing traiapjn^-isescie^jjpaduaita. s '' '
