VICTORIA GROSS WINNER.
An official cable messagb published yesterday, furnished particulars of the dating and initiative which won a Victoria Cross for Sergeant Samuel Forsyth, who was subsequently killed by a sniper. The deceased hero was a son of Mr Tbos. F. Forsyth, who is employed on the ferry-boat Mararoa. Sergeant Forsyth left with the Body of troope, being attaohed to the' Field! Engineers, and was among the first New Zealand troops to land on Galb'poli.' While there he was blown up by a shell, and was returned to Egypt, being under treatment in a hospital at Cairo for three weeks. Returning to the Peninsula he took part in the Suvla Bay operations, and was ultimately invalided to England,, suffering from jaundice. While in Great ' Britain lie married the daughter of Mr Thos. Gairdner, who held the position of' sub-matron of the Y.M.C.A. rooms at Glasgow. The late Sergeant Forsyth waa aman of deep religious convictions, and most of his time whilo off duty was spent in • evangelistic work, his influence among the droops in that direction being very marked.\
