MINING.

Matters in regard to the Mount ReadRosobery Mines Company, of which the Mount Lyell Company is the controlling factor, are assuming a tangible shape. Mr E. R. Crutcher, the metallurgical expert engaged in America in connection with the treatment of the Read-Rosebery ores, is still busy supervising the erection of the experimental unit at Queenstown reduction works, to enable him to determine the best electrolytio method of treating these zinciferous ores for recovering the zinc. Mr Crutcher is conversant with the methods in practice at three of the largest treatment plants now working successfully in America—one at Anaconda, one at Salt Lake City, and one in British Columbia; and the object of the local experiments is, presumably, to ascertain whether either of these, or a modification of any, or a combination of all three, will be the most suitable for treating ores, tho metal contents o£ which aro not qui to the same as those of the American ires.
