H. (West Plains). Corporal John Fyfe M'Donald, -who was killed on August 25, was the fifth son of Mr Allan M'Donald, 103 M-acandrew road, Dunedin. He -was educated at the Porbury School, anid on leaving school ho entered the Post Office. He went away 'with the 10th Reinforcements with another brother. He went to France, but -was sent to the London Post Office, and was there for some time. Then he was sent to Sling- Camp, and as drill instructor he went bacK to Prance. He had four other brothers at the front—two in the Fourth Reinforcements, one in the 10th, end one in the 15th. Two of his brothers are in a sanatorium in New Zealand, one died from sickness in Egypt, and one is a prisoner of war in Germany, but cannot be located). He lost his wife before he went away, and leaves two children. Private Albert Sinclair, of 1 Russell street, Dunedin, who has been reported -wounded in France '(gunsho-t wound in the left hand), has had a long and varied period of service. By camouflaging the question of age he .left •with the Fourth iV'ew Zealand Reinforcements at the age of 17L He served on Gallipoli until invalided with fever and Very severe dysentery. He recovered in time to take part in the evacuation of Gallipoli. Fighting in France he was woundied in the arm and leg, and for a time there-after was retained on duty in England. Recently Ee wias drafted to France once more, to be again wounded and returned to England as now announced. At the Middlemarch Presbyterian Church on Sunday the evening seivico was of a memorial character, in memory of Lancecorporal Thomas Burnet, who died from Wounds &i September 4. Mr W. J. Youngson preached a helpful and appropriate sermon, at the conclusion of which a resolution of sympathy with the bereaved relatives was carried by the congregations standing in silence. The " Dead March " in " Saul " was then pilayed. There are now 21 names 1 on the Strath-Taieri roll of honour. An impressive service was hed on Sunday evening _in the Hanover Street Baptist Church in memory of the Rev. Ray Ambury, news of whose death at the front in Franco on August 30 caine to hand lust week. The deceased was a native of New Plymouth; and became a student for the ministry of the Baptist denomination largely through the influence of the Rev. J. J. North. He took | his divinity course at Knox College, and won the esteem of the- professors and students there. His only 'ohargo was at Wanganui East, where he spent some two years in faithful service. He then acted as locum tenens at the Presbyterian Church at Bulls, and while there was called up for military service. The Rev: R. ii. Knowles-Kemptoii, who conducted the service, referred to his strength cf character, his ministerial faithfulness, and his loyalty, and expressed tho warm sympathy of the congregation with his stricken parents, who had lost their three sons within a few years, and with his sister, tho wife of the church secretary (Mi- E. II Drew). Special hymns were sung, and Mi F. H: Taylor' sang as a solo " Grossing tho Bar." The organist (Mrs J. H. Maclaren) played as a voluntary "Oh, Rest in the Lord." Private Robert Chirnside, who was killed 1 in action in France on August 29, was born at Balclutha 36 years ago, and was educated there. Ho was the second eon of Mr John Chirnside, now of Dtinedin. Private Chirnside served through the Boer war, and left New Zealand for tho front with the Twentythird Reinforcements. He resided at Stewart Island, and) leaves a wife and two children. Private Peter Taylor, who died from woundli at Wialton-on-Thames Hospital, was a son of Mr William Taylor, of Sioney Creek. The deceased enlisted from Waitoitoi, North Island, and was wounded in action on August 34. Private F. M. Milne, the youngest sen of Mr J. Milne, Taieri Beach, has been reported ■wounded cn .September s—the second occasion. He sustained a gunshot wound in the left thigh, and is. now in a Loncton hospital, where he is progressing favourably. Private Milne will be remembered by many Dunedin visitors to Mount Cook as one of the Alpine guides there. Gunner L. G. Ellison, killed -in action during'the German offensive., was a i.itive of Dunedin, Ul9 eldest soti of the late Mr Richard Ellison, and was cdncatcd at the Albany Street School. He was trained for the sea on. the training ship Amokura, and, proceeding Home, joined H.M.S. Blanche. He saw sen-ice in the North Soa for about 12 months, and then transferred into the Imperial army as a gunner. He was in a number of heavy engagements, but escaped with only slight wounds, until he mot his death. Private P. A. Ongley, killed in action, was in his twonty-sixth year, and left with tho 26th Reinforcements. He was the fifth son of Mr F. Ongley, of o:tmari,i. and received his primary educat ; on at St. Patrick's and South Schools, proceeding from the latter to tho Waitaki High School, and from there to the Otago University, where lie obtained his B.A. degree. He was prominent in football and cricket, circles, being a South Island representative in football and one of North Ota-ro rcprescnfa 4 ive cricketers.
