GLOAMING'S FINE PERFORMANCE. A STRIKING DEBUT. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. _ SYDNEY, September 16. The Daily Telegraph says that Gloaming's ; (m the Chelmsford Stakes) was on© of t.hA ' most striking displays of galloping ever - seen at Randwick. Gloaming behaved somewhat unkindly at ? the post, and lost some lengths by slipping half-way round; but from that point settled ! down to work nicely, and. assumed control J bofore it reached the home turn. Once in the straight, it left the others as if they i were standing—a remarkable performance, aa Gloaming, ia understood never to have been in. a race before. No one was more pleased at the fonn shown by Gloaming than the handicapper, Mr Daly. He called on Gloaming to concede weight in :i, the Novice Handicap to a number of horses ; who had some form, a-nd Gloaming waa promptly scratched. Mr Daly took the view that if he was wrong in estimating Gloaming's ability it was better to spoil the . : chances of a novice than to weight him in i a way to quite spoil the race if hie estimate of this galloper proved correct. The writer speaks favourably of Gloaming's Derby expectations, and adds: " Apparently Gloaming had not given any evidence of his remark- ■ able galloping powers when the entries closedfor the Epsom and Metropolitan racea; otherwise the horse might have got into one or more of these races in a way that would have . ' been a nightmare to, weight-adjusters." OTAKI RACES. (Per Hatted press Association.) "WELLINGTON, September 17. The following acceptances have been rej ceived for the Otaki races:— ! Silt, —Your report of the proceedings of tho Military Service Board, as published in J to-day's issue, m so far as it relates to our family, is not only very unjust but very ; misleading. Although not connected with, 5 the family business, I am one o£ the sona - of whom Mr Kellett referred to in these terms: " Out of a tamily of 10 sons not one : had gone to the war." Now, that roads > very nastily. Although he knew the facts, i Mr Kellett evidently desires it to be understood that all tho sons are of military age. *: Apparently he harbours a grievance. Of the 10 sons, five are of military age—• ; namely: Fred (not a miller), married 11 ./ children; Ernest, single, volunteered two.-:, years ago, classed medically unfit; Herbert, married, two children, classed C2 some ihontlis ago, served with the Seventh Contingent in the South African -wax for 20 ■ months, health much impaired ever since. (Where was Mr Kellett then?) Charles (not • a miller), married, three children, will coma in with the three-children class (the married ; members of the family were linked up years j before the war); Monty, the subject of the : appeal, was classed C2 until last July, when j he was classed CI and goes to take a coureo of " glaxo." j Of those over military age, James has a. 1 son back from the war, very ill, and a son i in camp, while George has a son who got too close to a shell at the Somme in 1916, 5 but is again in the lino, and a son dis- ' charged from camp as unfit. .j Ml>Kellett had himself the misfortune to lose a fine lad at tho front. Mr ; Kellett is probably no _ older than I somo of our family. Did he go to j tho front to avenge his son? No; he is j giving his services to his country 12,000 | miles from the danger zone, well entrenched i behind £500 per annum, whilst others fight j for him. If Mr Kellett will persist in wild vapourings in court, let him refrain from j animus and not injure has fellow citizens. .' Personally I have no sympathy with tha appeal heard yesterday. If a man is fit, hia ; place is at the front. —I am, etc., J September 18. A. E. EJabbawat. The first test of shrapnel was mado £n I England 112 years ago, when a oommittco of British Army men reported favourably ' on the invention of a fellow-offioer, Henry * Shrapnel.
