Haig's aviation report states: There is great aerial activity over the whole British front. On the 16th inst., despite strong opposition, we took a record number of photographs. Our aeroplanes and balloons report much damage in hostile battery positions, and many exnlo- 1 6ions and fires caused bv our "artillery fire. We dropped 24 tons of bombs in the daytime and 15 tons at night time on aerodromes, railheads, and dumps. There was intense daylong fighting, combats occurring at a considerable distance eastward of our lines. We brought down 45 hostile machines, of which seven were brought down in one fight by one of our squadrons. Wo drove down 20 others uncontrollable, and our anti-aircraft guns shot_ down one hostile machine. Sixteen British ma-chines are missing. AVIATION WORKS AND RAILWAY'S ATTACKED. SATISFACTORY RESULTS ATTAINED. LONDON, September 17. (Received Sept. 19, at 2 a.m.) The Air Ministry reports : On the afternoon of the 16th inst. we twice attacked the aeroplane works and chemical factory at Mannheim with excellent results. The enemy attacked us over the objective, and three British machines are missing.' We ' attacked the German home defence aero- ' drome at Hagenau. Bursts were observed on ! and near the hangars, one of which was ' set on fire. All of our machines returned. On the night of Sentember 16-17 we attacked three aerodromes with bombs and machine gunfire, with good results. We heavily attacked the railway at MetzSablon and Treves, starting three* fires at Metz-Sablon. We drooped bombs all round the Treves station. We also heavily attacked the Frankfurt station with good effect. The night began calm' but later high winds arose.
