MUNICIPALITIES AND THE BALLOT

DECISION BY WELLINGTON CITY COUNCIL. (Peb United Pbbss Association.) WELLINGTON, May 17. Recently the Wellington City Council deoided that, while regretting that so many of tho municipal stuff were being called up in the ballot, no appeals would be lodged on behalf of their employees. Last night, after an animated discussion, tho council decided, on a narrow majority, to rescind the previous resolution, and passed the following: "That while the oouncil affirms the principle that every man possible must be spared for service who may be drawn in tho ballot, councillors feel that full discretionary power must be left with the chief officers to appeal for employees whose loss would seriously inconvenience tho city's works, believing that the tribunal set up »by' tho Government can bo trusted to safeguard tho country's interests."
